Hues Informed by History
The pattern of the Nantucket Tartan™ nods to elements from the Barclay clan, honoring Robert Barclay, the Scottish Quaker who famously testified to Parliament in 1774 about the vital importance of Nantucket’s whale oil to the British Empire.
Its colors are inspired by the details that give the island character:
Rich Brown: For the "Faraway Land," derived from the Wampanoag language.
Deep Blue: For the maritime depths that built the island's wealth.
Soft Grey: For the "Little Grey Lady," evoking the fog, sea salt, and weathered shingles.
Full-Bodied Red: For the island's historic brick architecture and the cranberry bogs that once sustained the Wampanoag community.
